FREE LOCAL MARKETING GUIDE
Why Google Maps rankings change by location
A business can appear prominently near one part of town and lower down somewhere else. This beginner guide explains why local results vary and how to check them carefully.
What shapes local search results?
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance is how well the profile matches the search. Distance is how far the business is from the searcher or the location in the query. Prominence is how well-known the business is. These factors help explain why one business may appear in different positions from different places. Read Google’s guidance on local ranking.
There is no guaranteed number-one position. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
What a map visibility scan can tell you
A third-party scan can show observed results for a chosen search phrase from selected points on a map at a particular time. It can help you notice geographic patterns. Treat it as a snapshot: another person may see different results, and the scan is not an official Google report or a guarantee of future rankings.
Keep comparisons consistent
Use the same search phrase, map area, and scan settings when you compare later results. Write down the date and any meaningful changes made to the profile or website. Look at the pattern across the map, rather than relying on a single point or one “top three” number.
Start with Google’s free profile performance data
If you manage a verified Google Business Profile, its Performance report can show searches, views, calls, and website clicks. This is useful for understanding real customer activity. It is different from a map-grid scan: the report does not show where on a map each search position appeared. See how Google Business Profile performance works.
A simple check you can repeat
Choose one service and search phrase
Use wording a real customer might search for. Keep the phrase the same when you compare results.
Choose the area you want to understand
A business may be easier to find near its location than farther away. Note the area and scan settings so you can repeat the check.
Review the whole pattern
Notice which parts of the area show the business and which do not. A scan can help guide questions; it cannot promise that changes will improve rankings.
Check again after real updates
If the business updates accurate profile information or its website, compare later using the same search phrase and area. Google recommends providing complete and detailed Business Profile information; see its official guidance before making changes.
